Just like most Chinese paintings, this one is given the special meaning for two main reasons. First of all nine fish are a blessing for abundance throughout the year, and secondly lotus flowers are a symbol of purity.
The lotus rises from the muddy water, but is not tainted by the mud, symbolizing how one can be pure of heart even when their environment is not clean.
